Buying guide

How to get a fair mini-split quote

Ask every bidder

  • Is a Manual J (or equivalent) load calc included?
  • Exact outdoor + indoor model numbers?
  • Line-set length, height difference, and condensate plan?
  • Electrical scope (breaker, disconnect, whip, panel work)?
  • Permit and inspection fees included?
  • Labor warranty vs equipment warranty?
  • Who handles startup, refrigerant charge verification, and owner walkthrough?

Quote red flags

  • One price with no equipment models
  • “Same day” install with no site visit
  • Cash-only deep discount to skip paperwork
  • Refusing to pull permits
  • Upsizing “just in case” with no load calc
  • Unclear who owns the warranty registration

Compare apples to apples

Ask for a line-item proposal. A cheaper bid that omits a panel upgrade, condensate pump, or snow stand is not cheaper — it is incomplete. Prefer contractors who explain tradeoffs in plain language.
